Conference for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

On Thurs., May 1, 2008, Family and Community Service and the Widener University, Center for Social Work Education will be hosting the eighth annual conference for grandparents raising grandchildren, caregivers of special needs children, and professionals working with these families.
The conference, entitled Risk and Resilience Among Grandparents and Grandchildren will feature Roberta R. Greene, Ph.D. and will examine the protective factors at work in families where the grandparents are the primary caregivers for their grandchildren. Dr. Greene will be sharing her expertise on resiliency, especially as it applies to grandparent headed families. There will be additional workshops focused on skills and strategies to decrease risk factors for grandchildren and increase resiliency for all family members.
Dr. Greene is an author and Professor, and the Louis and Ann Wolens Centennial Chair in Gerontology and Social Welfare, at the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. Clinical social work with older adults and their families is one of her areas of special interest, as is research and publication. She has worked for the National Association of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education. Prior to her time at the University of Texas, she taught at George Mason University, the University of Maryland, the University of Georgia and she served as the Dean at Indiana University School of Social Work. Dr. Greene is the author of seven texts, numerous research articles and is currently working in the area of film and web design. She is the mother of three adult children and the grandmother of six. She is the recipient of the 2004 NASW Pioneer Award and the AGE-SW 2005 Career Achievement Award.
Representatives from various community agencies will be present to inform participants about the resources available to them. The conference is supported by Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), Family and Community Service of Delaware County and Widener University, Center for Social Work Education.
The fee for the conference is $75.00 for professionals, $25.00 for students and $5.00 for grandparent caregivers. The fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, continuing education credits for psychologists and social workers (6 CEUs), and Foster Care Education Credits. The Second Time Around Parents Program, a program developed at Family and Community Service of Delaware County, has been working with grandparent caregivers for over 18 years.
